Inclement Weather Policies – Baltimore County

Posted February 2, 2010

Dear Parents,

Well, winter is here in full force!  Remember the Open Door Website is up to date as our easiest and most immediate way to communicate, about closings, planned and weather related.  For days we know schools are closed, the availability of care is listed on-line at www.opendoorcare.com.

With the prevalence of inclement weather this time of year, please take a few minutes to review the Baltimore County Public School’s policies in regard to whether child care services can operate in the schools.

School opens late due to inclement weather – Open Door Centers are closed.

School closes early due to inclement weather – Open Door Centers are closed.

BCPS announces that after school and evening activities are cancelled – Open Door Centers are considered an after school activity by BCPS, and are closed.

Schools announce in the morning that they will be closed for the day due to inclement weather – Open Door Centers are closed.

When early closings or announcements of cancelled after school activities occur, your Open Door Director will use phone numbers, that you have provided, to call and alert parents of the current situation and to instruct them to pick up their children as soon as possible upon dismissal by the school.  Any Plan of Action for the pick-up of your child, such as going home on the bus or going home with another parent, should be communicated with the school.

Please take this opportunity to provide your Director with the most up-to-date phone numbers they can use to communicate with you.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and wish you and your family the best.

In an article by Ric Kahn in The Boston Globe published January 4, 2009 -

Nearly 18 million low-income U.S. children receive free or reduced-price lunches, but less than half of those opt in to similar breakfast programs, according to a recent study from Harvard University researchers.  While researchers say school breakfasts may improve attendance, test scores, grades, behavior and health, many parents remain unaware of the option or have a difficult time getting children to school in time to eat before classes begin.
