Open Door Weekly Theme – Over the River
The weekly theme for December 9, 2019 is “Over the River”.
Children will learn about the life cycle of a river. They will look at its source in the mountains, its journey and merging with tributaries as it meanders through the countryside, and its final destination as it slows to the mouth of the river where it joins the ocean. Children will develop a model of the Earth’s surface and use it to discover an important principle about how rivers and watersheds work. They will explore the benefits and uses of rivers, ranging from transportation to recreation and investigate both the negative and positive effects of floods. The advantages and disadvantages of dams will help the children see how the impact humans have had on the environment surrounding a river is not always compatible with the resources naturally provided.
